Broughshane Primary School’s P6 and P7 class project on bridges was brought to life when Farrans, in conjunction with the Institution of Civil Engineers, gave them their very own bridge to build, letting them put their research into practice.
The exercise, which is to build a 15m cable stayed bridge, is a fun way for children to get an insight into civil engineering. It is also an opportunity for them to: use simple construction methods; gain an awareness of health and safety issues; work as a team; increase their confidence and self-esteem through participation; use logic and problem solving skills; learn the basic principles of forces involved in bridge construction.
The children were assisted in constructing the bridge by Raymond Millar, Wendy Armstrong and Kieran McElmeel from Farrans and Paul McCauley on behalf of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
The children showed a great knowledge of bridges and very clearly enjoyed the experience. We believe there will be some excellent engineers graduating out of Broughshane in years to come!
“We would like to say a huge thank you for coming to visit us today. We had a terrific time and thoroughly enjoyed getting to walk across our own bridge! Many thanks again”
